My Attempt To Pampering Myself

So, long story short, I was diagnosed with CML (chronic myeloid leukemia) in the fall of 2023.

Chemo has helped, despite serious side effects

Since then, I have been on, I forget how many, chemo meds. They are helping, but the first one caused a stroke back in May 2024. Thankfully, over time and with therapy, I am doing well with the stroke symptoms.

Currently, my cancer numbers have been almost to zero. All of my other numbers are looking good as well.

Trying to reduce my stress

I have been under a lot of stress. I have five jobs (teaching at five different colleges, nine classes this spring), moving into a new home, and there is the cancer bit.

Last week I have a friend come stay with me for a few days and I decide I want to get us massages for the following Monday. Now, I have never had a massage before.

I called and set up the massage, fill out medical bits, which included my cancer diagnosis. I get a call the Friday before and they want me to get a doctor’s note. Ok, so I do, making sure it is medically safe.

Needing a note from my doctor

My doctor says it is fine and signs the note for me. The nurse even called to say my doctor said to enjoy my massage. She even giggles at me, over the phone, for calling to ask about it all. Like what is the big deal?

I did research a bit and if my numbers were not good would be understandable. I have a doctor’s note, all is well.

Refused a massage despite my doctor's note

Monday comes around, the day of the massage, and just a few hours before the appointment, the owner calls and cancels my massage. He stated, the therapists that do “oncology massages” did not feel comfortable giving me a massage.

Here I am with my friend trying not to make a big deal about it so she doesn’t feel bad. He waived any cost for my friend, so we went.

It was odd to me that my doctor gave me an all clear to do it yet there I was, no massage. I am new to all this and learning every day. I can never assume anything.
