Oral vs. IV Chemotherapy

What are the pros and cons of oral versus intravenous chemotherapy?

  1. I had chemo 44 years ago. After the port was removed the area was infected and took a long time to heal. There is hardly a scar visible today.

    1. have you been in remission all these years? I'm so glad your port site healed and you're here to tell about it. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I went the port route once I understood the need for the many draws for testing + the actual infusions. Veins, I learned, can only take so much, and rather than risk an issue, I signed up for the port. While it was suggested the process was a quick in-and-out procedure, it involved much more than I would have expected. It was removed 18 months later, and the surgical scar has all but disappeared. 1. I was diagnosed with AML 5 mos. ago. I have been on oral chemo drugs ever since. ( Venetoclax and Inqovi), a combination drug. Im scared that because of my age (71), the Oncologist has decided to order drugs that aren't as effective as the IV meds.
Probably totally no reason to fear...

      1. I was in a similar situation. I had lymphoma and they wanted to use the CHOP protocol, but, unfortunately, my heart wasn't strong enough (due to previous heart attacks due to previous side effects) to have the whole protocol. I had to rely on just the C-OP protocol and they said it SHOULD be enough, but no guarantee. Fortunately it was enough to put me into remission, so in my case, it did work, but it didn't erase the feelings of anxiety. Just know you are not alone! If there's anything we can do just ask. Keep on keepin' on, DPM

    2. I should add, I have a PICC line in place for the many blood draws.
