Onset Issues

Did your doctor ever express the possibility of an onset condition with multiple myeloma? It refers to cancers diagnosed at ages 20-50. The numbers seem to be rising, Are you in this category?

  1. I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in December of 2007. The surgeon had the discussion concerning my options and my husband and sister were both with me. He offered a mastectomy where the breast would be removed totally and reconstructive surgeries would be performed and that it was the most painful of the options. I could have a lumpectomy that would remove the Vance and healthy tissue around it. He said that I was lucky to have caught this fairly early. There was always a 4% chance of developing blood issues at a later time.
He failed to tell me that it could be multiple myeloma. And my husband and my sister both thought that the less painful of the two options with only a 4% chance of any issue possibly happening, was the better choice.
I asked if I had to have reconstructive surgery after the mastectomy, the surgeon said “No, but it would be a hindrance concerning bras, etc.”
So I opted for the lumpectomy.
I was checked every four months, labs etc. 2011 I was diagnosed with MGUS. 2015 I was diagnosed with Smoldering Multiple Myeloma. 2020 it showed some activation in my numbers. 2021 it became a very raging multiple myeloma. But so far it’s under control.
I don’t know if what I have posted falls into the category. But if the “Blood Issues” had been thoroughly explained in detail to me, I would have chosen the mastectomy that once it’s done, there is no chemo or radiation.
My Aunt called me months afterwards when she found out that I had breast cancer. She had her left breast removed and had a clean bill of health when she was 49. She passed at age 83.
Please just get as much DETAILED information about ALL of IT before deciding on which way you are going to go.

    1. That sentence should say cancer -NOT Vance.
