Cinderalla Effect

Having both CLL and NHL my wife has named the "Chemo fog" effect to Cinderella effect. Sometimes in the afternoon, I get really foggy. Yesterday we were shopping for groceries and I went to get something off the shelf. I couldn't remember why or what I was doing, and she finally came and got my arm, and said time to go home. When this happens, I feel humiliated. She never makes me feel bad, but I still feel less than.

I know it is super hard not to feel embarrassed, but please try to give yourself a break. Unfortunately,, brain fog happens sometimes and all you can do is the best you can do. You are lucky to have a supportive wife for sure. Take care. Susan (Blood-Cancer.com Team member)

I had really really bad brain fog during and after treatment. I've literally forgotten whole people I'd previously met. Like Susan said it's hard to not feel embarrassed but please know you're not alone. A lot of people go through what you're experiencing, it's a normal side effect. Brain fog is rarely mentioned as another symptom to consider. It can be overwhelming to forget at such a quick pace, but it's also a reminder to regroup, breathe, and eventually, you'll remember- then carry on. Wishing you the very best!

Stay positive and keep pushing through! The same thing happens to me too, but I try to keep it from working against my happiness. Like you, I’m fortunate to have a very supportive wife and family.

It can be embarrassing, for sure! I have to agree with everyone, though. Patience, breath work, calm, and a little humour can make it easier to tolerate. Along with calendars, lists, alarms, reminders and some good ole stick-to-itiveness. Is that a word?

We have all been there, my friend, you are not alone for sure. It is annoying, frustrating, and yes, even embarrassing. Especially when you do it in front of someone on a date or at a job interview or something like that. We can only do our best, though, when it comes right down to it, and that's all. In the meantime, though, you can always come here and be with people who get it. Keep on keepin' on, DPM

This is never a fun experience. And in the moment, it doesn't really help to know that it happens to so many of us. But I hope now that some time has passed, and you read these supportive replies, you can give yourself the grace you deserve. I always tell myself that I've earned the forgetfulness through months of treatment. I say wear it like a badge of honor! 😀 Being easy on ourselves usually makes things easier.
