Second opinions

What should I expect when I go to a doctor for a second opinion for a blood cancer? Would they just review test results from the previous doctor, would they examine you check for lymph nodes etc? Your thoughts and experiences please.

  1. Many doctors like to run their own tests with radiologists and examiners they like and trust, so they may want you to do the whole slew of testing again (also to make sure nothing was missed or taken wrong). Usually, the way it want for me is they look at the existing info, decide if there's a warrant for doing it all again, and then order it all again if they think there's even a small chance it could show something different. I'd set aside time for the appointment if possible. Let us know how it goes! Keep on keepin' on, DPM

    1. Hi, I agree with Daniel. The second opinion will want to review their own group of testing; however, they will also review what has been assessed prior to that, in my case after the second source reviewed the first hematologist's findings, I was advised I was asymptomatic in other words smoldering multiple myeloma. There are so many points here but definitely finding the right specialist is key... one that treats multiple myeloma oncologists. Secondly, if there's an inkling of doubt then seek that opinion, in my case it saved me from being treated sooner than needed. Please let us know how everything turns out. Best!

      1. Agree with what has been said - 1) find the best MD and Team that you can for your specific condition (2) have your current test results sent ahead 3) be prepared to be retested vs just a review of your last findings 4) understand the results of new testing may be identical to an earlier diagnosis or different 5)ask lots of questions and keep your options open.

        1. I am looking into a second opinion right now, so I'm glad you asked the question. Please let us know how it goes for you. Ann (Blood-Cancer.com Team)
